While the data used for this research is not representative of every image on the internet, or proprietary datasets used by large and small tech companies across the world, the techniques used show that biases can be learned from datasets, even without humans choosing which photos should represent specific ideas.
Brilliant article, Dave.
In-depth, articulate, well researched and so readable! Your writing is so lucid, I learned a lot!
As an Indian residing in Ireland for the last decade, I totally empathise with your frustrations & fear.
My tuppence based on Angela Saini's excellent "Superior": Race isn't real. There is no scientific consensus that it exists. Or how many there are. Or how to classify them. Racial categories we use are arbitrary. Moulded by social and cultural constructs. I genuinely think this book is the only origin story of our species we need. I show 6 logical fallacies of the human brain that cause this racial bias to occur.
I reckon it makes a perfect science-backed companion article to your brilliant writing - so would really appreciate your feedback!
