However, what I hope this idea illustrates is the skill of designing your motivational efforts. If you change the problem from, “how do I motivate myself enough to reach this goal” to, “how can I design the goal so that motivation is automatic” you’ll end up making far more progress.

My take on creativity and motivation is based on Daniel Pink's excellent "Drive". Big takeaway: creativity is painful and the “carrot and stick” approach hinders it. Akin to your advice, Pink says that nurturing and cajoling our intrinsic motivation leads to enhanced output and satisfaction, more so than extrinsic rewards such as money, fame, followers, claps, comparisons etc.
